What’s Falling Apart in Your Life?

I want to become a coach, but I don’t have my own life figured out. Is that… ok?

We hear this question more often than you might think. A lot of people who are toying with the idea of becoming a coach are waiting for the perfect moment. Waiting to feel like they have their lives more figured out. Waiting to feel more… “together”. Waiting to feel like they have some kind of wisdom to contribute to someone else’s life.

But let’s face it. Having it together isn’t a thing. Life is constantly falling apart and coming back together in new ways. People have babies. They move house. Say goodbye to loved ones. Change jobs. People grow older (babies grow older too!). As coaches, our lives are no exception to this.

This constant process of change is the reason why people need coaching. Change, and fumbling our way through it, is a part of what makes life so beautiful (and at times, so hard).
Becoming a coach does not mean being an expert at life. As coaches, we practice holding space for others. We practice filtering all of the biases, hopes, fears, and expectations that might rise to the surface for us during a coaching conversation. We practice only passing on what is useful to our clients. These are the muscles we build, as coaches (for those of you out there who are educators, you probably already have some of these muscles!)

Nowhere in the job description of a coach is there a need for you to be “getting it right” in your own life. That said, training to be a coach helps build self-awareness, mindfulness, and a better ability to notice our own tendencies and self-regulate. And part of becoming a coach also means receiving transformative coaching support ourselves.

Even with decades of coaching experience, we don’t have it all together. We are imperfect humans trying to make meaning of our lives in a world full of storms. But we do spend a lot of time practicing and understanding what it means to not have it together— what it means to be a human being, in a constant state of becoming. We dig that process.

What’s falling apart in your life right now, and what is coming together? Who are you becoming, in this season of you? What helps you move through these shifts? Send us a message (hello@globalfocuscoaching.com) and let us know!

With love and care,
